What Is Windows on Arm? Arm64 Laptops and App Compatibility Explained

Updated Oct 10, 2026

Windows on Arm is the edition of Windows 11 that runs on Arm64 processors — Qualcomm Snapdragon X/X2, the new NVIDIA RTX Spark platform, and older Arm chips — instead of the x86/x64 processors Intel and AMD use. It powers the Copilot+ PC category, all-day-battery laptops, and, since October 2026, the first NVIDIA-powered Arm laptops. Software-wise it is full Windows 11: same desktop, same browsers, same Microsoft Store. The difference is underneath, in which machine code the processor understands.

Native Arm64 vs emulated apps

Two words decide everything on an Arm laptop:

  • Native Arm64: the app was compiled for Arm. Best speed, best battery, instant start. Major browsers, Zoom, Slack, Spotify, WhatsApp, Photoshop, Premiere Pro and 2,300+ more titles ship native builds.
  • Emulated (Prism): the app is an ordinary x86/x64 program. Windows 11 translates it on the fly with the built-in Prism emulator. Most apps run well — as of October 2026, 9,177 of the 9,215 tracked titles in our database are compatible — with a modest speed and battery cost when emulated.
  • Not working: a small set — mostly apps with kernel drivers or kernel-level anti-cheat — cannot run. Check the specific title before you buy hardware around it.

You rarely need to care which is which: Windows runs both transparently. It matters for performance-critical work (video editing, large compiles, local AI) and for the anti-cheat edge cases in online games.

Which devices run it

The current generation splits into two platforms: Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite (up to 18 Oryon cores, 80+ TOPS NPU) and NVIDIA RTX Spark (Grace CPU + Blackwell GPU, up to 128 GB unified memory), with first laptops shipping October 16, 2026. New-chip note: 26H1 vs 26H2

Since February 2026, new Arm silicon ships with Windows 11 26H1, a chip-enablement branch that cannot upgrade in place to the regular 26H2 annual update. Both branches run the same native-plus-Prism model; actual app compatibility still depends on system updates, drivers and app versions — see the 26H1/26H2 split.

Before you buy, check your apps

The fastest way to de-risk a switch: search your must-have apps in the database and look at the verdict. Native means a no-compromise experience; emulated usually means fine; not-working means pick a different machine for that app.
