Windows 11 on Arm vs Regular Windows: What's Different, What's Missing

Windows 11 on Arm is full Windows — same Start menu, same Explorer, same settings, same updates. It is not a “lite” or “S-mode” edition. The differences live underneath, and they’re worth knowing exactly, because they decide whether your specific workflow fits.
What’s identical
Everything you see, and the overwhelming majority of what you run. The OS itself is native Arm64; x86/x64 apps run through Prism emulation; and by 2026 most major apps ship native Arm64 builds. For typical browsing-office-media-chat use, you would never notice the architecture.
Microsoft’s own “doesn’t work” list
Straight from the official Arm-based PCs FAQ:
- Drivers must be Arm64. Hardware, games and apps only work if their drivers are built for Arm — the root of most peripheral issues.
- Some third-party antivirus can’t install. Defender works fully; check your AV vendor before buying.
- Windows Fax and Scan doesn’t exist on Arm.
- Some IMEs, assistive technologies and cloud-storage apps may have issues — check the specific app in our database.
- Games needing OpenGL above 1.1, or kernel anti-cheat drivers, fail unless those components support Arm — the detail is in our gaming guide.
The power-user caveat: virtualization
Hyper-V exists on Arm (Pro editions), but virtualization runs same-architecture guests only: you can spin up Arm64 Windows or Arm64 Linux VMs, not x86 ones. Emulating a full x86 OS (e.g. via QEMU) technically works and is painfully slow. If an x86-only VM is core to your job, Arm isn’t your platform yet.
What Arm has that x86 doesn’t
The trade runs both ways. Copilot+ Arm machines ship a 40+ TOPS NPU powering features many x86 PCs lack: Windows Studio Effects (camera/voice cleanup in any call app), Live Captions with real-time translation, on-device Recall (opt-in, encrypted, local), and Auto Super Resolution for games. Plus the headline reasons people choose Arm: multi-day-feeling battery life and full performance unplugged.
The verdict logic
- Fine for nearly everyone: browsing, office suites, communication, media, photo editing, mainstream development.
- Check first: peripheral vendor software, niche pro tools, VPN/security clients — search the database.
- Wrong platform (today): kernel-anti-cheat competitive gaming, x86 VM workflows, hardware that will never get Arm64 drivers.
