Windows 26H1 vs 26H2
Why new Arm PCs sit on a different Windows branch than everyone else
In 2026 Microsoft split the Windows release train. Version 26H1 (February 2026) is a standalone chip-enablement release that ships pre-installed on new Arm silicon such as Snapdragon X2 — feature-equivalent to 25H2 at launch and still serviced with updates, but built on a different Windows core, so it cannot upgrade in place to 26H2. Version 26H2 is the annual update for existing PCs on 24H2/25H2 — including older Snapdragon X Elite laptops — delivered as a small enablement package.

-
26H1 — new silicon only
Snapdragon X2 devices ship with 26H1. It is not an update you install; its whole job is day-one support for next-generation Arm chips. Microsoft says these devices will get a path to a future release.
-
26H2 — the annual update
Existing PCs on 24H2/25H2 move to 26H2 via an enablement package: a movable taskbar, a refreshed Start menu, File Explorer improvements, Task Manager NPU columns and more.

What it means for apps
Both branches use the same native-Arm64-plus-Prism compatibility model. Drivers, GPU plugins, anti-cheat and individual apps still need their own verification — your software checklist does not change.
