Prism emulation
x86 and x64 apps run unmodified, translated to Arm64 on the fly
Prism is the emulator built into Windows 11 on Arm since version 24H2. It translates x86 and x64 machine code into Arm64 while an app runs, so most existing Windows software works without the vendor changing anything.
Key points
-
Translate once, reuse
Prism translates code in blocks and caches the result, so hot paths pay the cost once and later launches start faster.
-
32-bit and 64-bit
Both x86 and x64 apps are supported, side by side with native Arm64 apps on the same desktop.
-
Apps, not drivers
Emulation covers user-mode code. Kernel drivers, some VPN and security tools, and kernel anti-cheat need real Arm64 builds.
